Kapolei Dining Options while on Vacation in Ko Olina
One exit away from the Beach Villa Resort is the town of Kapolei, Hawaii. It's about a five minute drive on the "Makai" side of the Freeway. (Makai means towards the ocean. The other direction you'll hear is "Mauka" or towards the mountain.)
Kapolei is called the "second city" with Honolulu being the "first" as all of the new government offices, a new University of Hawaii campus, etc. are being constructed out this way. Here you will find the Safeway Grocery Store, the new Costco, the new Target and other stores.
The new light rail system will start here in Kapolei and will carry passengers all the way to Ala Moana shopping center and all points in between. It is set to start operating in 2014.
Here is the list of dining establishments we frequent in Kapolei. We would not hesitate to recommend these restaurants to our own families and we frequent these establishments.
Assaggio's Restaurant - 777 Kamokila Blvd, Kapolei, HI 96707 (808) 674-8801
My favorite restaurant in Kapolei is Assaggios Italian Restaurant. I'm a "local boy" and when I'm home in Hawaii, I usually eat all of the food I can't get on the mainland. With that being said, I like the food at Assaggio's so much that I could eat here every day. The food quality is top notch and the prices are more reasonable then say at Roy's or Azul's at the Ihilani. The food is not "resort" priced and a good value for the quality of the food.
Chun Wah Kam - 885 Kamokila Blvd, Kapolei, HI 96707 (808) 693-8838, (on the same side of the street as Assaggio's, Chun Wah Kam is to the left) is the new Chinese takeout place that also serves takeout Dim Sum. The local favorite is the Pork filled Manapua. In Chinese it's called a Char Siu Bao. Char Siu is the pork, Bao is the bun. A Chinese sandwich. My favorite is the Kalua Pig Manapua. Manapua's make a yummy food gift for family and the staff.
Take a number when you enter and wait until they call your number to order.
Chun Wah Kam also has a nice selection of Chinese food for either dining in or for taking out. They also have party sized pans in multiple sizes which is handy when hosting visitors in your villa or in the guest lounge.
Genki Sushi - Located in the same shopping center as Target. You'll see it on the right side as you exit the freeway. Love, Love, Love the Poke sushi. Poke is the local staple made up of Ahi Tuna, Soy Sauce & Sesame Oil. The Poke sushi has a piece of Nori wrapped around some rice, with the Poke placed on top.
If you've never been to Genki Sushi, bring the kids. They love that the food goes around on a conveyer belt and when something good comes along, you pick up the plate and then eat. At the end of your dinner, the wait staff counts up the # of plates you have on the table and that's how they figure up your tab.
Boston kin Pizza - Located in the same shopping center as Safeway. Thank your lucky stars that Boston Pizza exists in Hawaii, otherwise you would be stuck with the standard Pizza Hut or Papa Johns. Boston Pizza makes what I would call New York style, thin crust pizza. Like Ray's pizza in Manhattan.
The pizza is so good it brings a smile to my face just thinking about their pies. The pies are so large by the way that they almost won't fit in the largest pizza box you have ever seen. If you order by the slice, a slice is sized like what you would get if you ordered two large slices in most pizza parlors. Boston Pizza is a hit for both the children and parents.
Local Fast Food - Our fast food comes from "Zippy's" a good local place for plate lunches and local food. They have a location in Kapolei. They are a three in one kind of place, a sit down, dine in restaurant; a fast food take out counter with outdoor seating; and a Napoleon's bakery which has really good pastries. This or Safeway both have good baked goods. I stop at both places for breakfast items.
There is also an Outback Steakhouse and a Chili's here in Kaploei along with a water park and movie theater. Outback prints a Hawaii version of their menu here as you can get Rice instead of a potato with your Steak! In Hawaii, you eat rice with pretty much everything.
So go out and explore our local foods and enjoy the wide variety. It would be our pleasure.
